The civil engineers had a split a brick weekend on 11 and 12 July to build up a supply of half bricks for the bricklayers. The production line is Stephen Lear, on the right, feeding whole bricks to Richard Antliff (seated) who is positioning the bricks in the splitter. Mike Lewis, in the background, works the lever to split each brick, while Andy Braben, on left, is stacking the half bricks on a palette. The purpose of splitting the bricks is to replicate the appearance of an early 20th century brick wall in English bond of alternate headers and stretchers, while conforming to modern building regulations of having an insulated cavity wall.
